2026 Honorees
Kelly McMasters
Kelly McMasters is an essayist, professor, mother, and former bookshop owner. She is the author of two memoirs, The Leaving Season: A Memoir-in-Essays and Welcome to Shirley: A Memoir from an Atomic Town, and co-editor of Wanting: Women Writing About Desire and This Is the Place: Women Writing About Home. Her first book is the basis for the documentary film “The Atomic States of America,” a Sundance selection, and her essays have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, and Newsday, among others. Kelly is a Professor of English at Hofstra University and lives with her family in Port Washington, where she serves on the advisory boards of AGATE and The Ed. Foundation. Her first job was as a page at her local public library, where she learned the power of community coming together over books, and she is so grateful to be raising her children in a town with a library like this one.
Mara Silverstein
Mara Silverstein is the co-founder of Book RePort, a new independent bookstore in Port Washington, created to celebrate a shared love of reading and community. A longtime Port Washington resident and active volunteer, she is passionate about bringing people together through books, ideas, and conversation. Mara lives in Port Washington with her husband, Baron, and their three daughters, Talia, Lili, and Ava, and is honored to be recognized by the Library community.
Kathleen Schechter
Kathleen Schechter is an educator, literacy consultant, and co-founder of Book RePort. She spends much of her time reading and talking about books, whether in classrooms, book clubs, or conversations over coffee. Kathleen lives in Port Washington with her husband, Michael, and their daughters, Kaitlyn, Emily, and Sophie. She is honored to help bring a bookstore back to the community and is deeply grateful to be recognized by the Port Washington Library Foundation.
